Jaw Reduction Surgery (Jaw Contouring and Jaw Shaving, V line)
For persons with wide faces due to oversize jaws and thus making the faces out of proper proportion, some may want to have slimmer faces. Jaw reduction surgery (V line) can help you to have a smaller and slimmer lower facial portion, with a pleasing symmetry. Before surgery, an X-ray of the jaw bone and teeth will be carried out so that the surgeon could plan the degree of surgery. The operation will take 2-3 hours under anesthesia, with a one-night hospital stay. The normal recovery period is about 2-3 weeks.
Before & After
The incision of jaw reduction surgery can be placed at two positions, namely:
1. Skin Incision – the surgery is made outside the mouth
An incision will be made near the outside jaw angle at a length of about 3-5 cm. The surgeon will make a cut through the muscle to reach the angle of lower jaw, and then lift the muscle that covers the lower jaw bone at a length equal to the bone to be removed. An electric saw will be used to cut and remove the jaw bone to have the desired width. After the bone is removed, the surgeon will shave the remaining bone to create a smooth arch and then close the cut by using fine sutures.
Disadvantage of skin incision: the nerve that supplies sensation to the muscle at the mouth corners may be injured, causing the outer corners of the mouth to descend.
2. Incision in the inside of the mouth
An incision of about 3-5 cm will be made behind the last molar tooth by gradually cutting open the muscle that covers the jaw bone and the tissues overlying the bone outer surface will be lifted. Then an electric saw will be used to cut the lower jaw bone. After the bone is removed, the surgeon will shave the remaining bone to create a smooth arch and then close the cut by using fine sutures. Lower jaw bone reduction surgery requires a high level of skill and experience of plastic and reconstructive surgeons to render the surgery outcome with an aesthetically pleasing and balanced facial shape.
Advantage of the incision in the inside of the mouth: the side effect to the nerve that supplies sensation to the muscle at the mouth corners can be reduced.
Jaw Contouring in Thailand
In the case where the jaws to be reduced are not too large, jaw contouring is recommended. This technique can help reduce bone thickness by about 2-3 millimeters. An incision will be made, similar to the case of jaw reduction surgery, and a bone drill will be used, instead of an electric saw, to reshape the bone to create an aesthetically slimmer and narrow face. The operation will take 2-3 hours under anesthesia, with a one-night hospital stay, and the normal recovery period is about 2-3 weeks.
Jaw Augmentation in Thailand
This technique corrects the lower facial portion, or jawline, to be aesthetically well-balanced and pleasing. The unbalance of the two sides of the face is caused by the jaw bone asymmetry on both sides. Therefore, jaw augmentation (V line) will help create well-proportioned and better balanced lower facial features. A stronger and more defined jawline can bring more masculinity to a man. The incision will be outside the mouth by making a cut near the outside jaw angle at a length of about 3-5 cm, through the muscle to reach the jaw bone. An electric saw will be used to cut and remove the jaw bone as desired. After that, the remaining bone will be shaved to have a smooth bone surface, and then the incision will be closed. Disadvantage of this technique is that the nerve that supplies sensation to the muscle at the mouth corners may be injured, causing descended mouth corners.
Aftercare Jaw Reduction Surgery (V line)
- Sleep with your head raised up on several pillows for 3-4 days to relieve swelling.
- Rinse your mouth frequently to have bloodstains at the incision removed easily.
- Use mouthwash to reduce oral infection.
- Take soft diet for about 1-2 weeks.
- After surgery, bruising may occur at the neck and under the chin, which will disappear in about 1 week, and numbness or some altered sensation at the lips may be felt, which will commonly return to normal in about 3 weeks.
